Moving Locally?

Moving locally?Whether you are moving from afar or just across the street, you will benefit from working with an Exclusive Buyer Agent. However, you will have a few advantages over the family relocating from outside of the Fayetteville area but there are still some thing to keep in mind. Especially when hiring a moving company. The company that moves you across state lines must uphold federal law and usually follows a tariff that governs rates, rules and charges. However, with a local move, which is generally defined as within 30 miles, customers may not necessarily be guaranteed that same protection. That said, I recommend two rules as you prepare for your local move.

Rule No. 1 -- Get references. Talk to friends, relatives and colleagues about their moving experiences. As you narrow down the companies you're going to pick from, call the Better Business Bureau or, even better, visit the county courthouse where you can search public records for any local lawsuits that may have been filed against the company.

Rule No. 2 -- Don't pick a moving company because it has the best ad in the phone book and don't pick a mover because it's affiliated with a big name interstate carrier. When it comes to local moves, that affiliation doesn't necessarily mean anything.  On the other hand, don’t rule out a company because of it’s affiliation with a national company. See Rule #1.

Saving Money on Your Local Move is Important

Christopher Solomon, of MSN Real Estate, posts 18 Easy Ways To Save on Your Move. Solomon states, “Many people overlook obvious ways to lower the cost of schlepping stuff to a new place, but you can save hundreds of dollars.”

Moving Checklist

The trauma of moving can be an added stress for buyers, here’s a little advice on some things to take care of early. If you do, they will go a long way to lowering your stress come moving day!

1. Weed out items you won’t be moving; hold a garage sale or donate them to charity.

2. Get estimates from moving companies.

3. Make a list of people and organizations—credit cards, magazines, college alumni associations—that will need to be notified of the move.

4.  If applicable, look at schools and day care facilities in new area. Forward school records.

5. Complete change-of-address forms.

6. Check homeowners’ policy to see if possessions are covered during the move.

7. Decide how you’ll move valuables.

8. Contact phone, satellite, cable TV providers, and utility companies with change of address.

9. Empty and defrost refrigerator.
